The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) has announced the addition of the Pepperdine University Women’s Indoor Track and Field team, beginning with the 2023 season. Located in Malibu, California and primarily affiliated with the West Coast Conference, Pepperdine has been a member of the MPSF in men’s volleyball since the inaugural 1992-93 academic year of the conference and was a previous member in men’s water polo from 1992-2015. The Waves have been competing in women’s indoor track and field since 2016, though will participate in a conference championship meet for the first time. Pepperdine has won 10 NCAA team championships across its athletic department, which include the 2005 men’s volleyball and 1997 men’s water polo titles while members of the MPSF.
“The MPSF welcomes the Pepperdine Women’s Indoor Track and Field team as the newest member of our conference,” said second-year MPSF Executive Director Foti Mellis. “The Waves will no doubt strengthen our championship field as we continue to build on a successful first season in a world-class facility.” Pepperdine Women’s Indoor Track and Field represents the 12th team added to the MPSF across 11 sports since the arrival of Mellis on June 1, 2021.
The 30th edition of the MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championship will be contested in “The Podium” in Spokane, Washington for the second year, February 17-18, 2023. The event is currently lined up for 17 teams--11 for women and six for men across 11 universities from the Big West and West Coast Conferences. Scheduled to join Pepperdine on the women’s side are BYU, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Portland, San Francisco, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside. The Cougars, Titans, Matadors, Beach, Pilots, and Highlanders will also compete in men’s competition. Eleven of the MPSF’s 103 overall NCAA team titles have been produced in women’s indoor track and field.
“We are thrilled to be joining the MPSF for Women's Indoor Track and Field,” said Pepperdine Head Coach Lauren Floris, who will enter her second season at the helm and still holds multiple cross country and outdoor track records while a student-athlete for the Waves from 2008-12. “It's going to provide our women with memorable championship experiences and the opportunity to compete against some very talented athletes.”
