2025 MPSF Athlete of the Year

Frederik Breuer (Bonn, Germany) occupied the stroke seat for the Golden Bears’ Varsity 8+ which won the inaugural MPSF Championship in 5:37.977. He was also in the stroke seat for Cal’s Varsity 8+ wins over nationally-ranked Brown, Yale, and Wisconsin. Breuer won Cal’s athletic department-wide Jake Gimbel award for the top graduating male student-athlete, who most embodies the Golden Bear spirit of excellence in athletics and academics. He additionally won the team Dean Witter award (voted on by the team) as the student-athlete who leads the team culture and embodies team values of “loyalty,” “proficiency,” and “spirit.’ A 2024 Olympian for Germany and 2023 All-Pac-12 selection, Breuer earns the MPSF’s first-ever men’s rowing athlete of the year honor.
2025 MPSF Freshman of the Year

Elliott Donovan-Davies (Llanharan, Wales) sat in the seven seat all spring for the Cardinal with the exception of one race. Donovan-Davies accumulated a 7-2 overall record when he was in the boat, including a win against a third-ranked crew from Brown University. He also set Stanford’s freshman 2K record on the C2 at 5:48.5, which ranks amongst the fastest of any freshman across the nation this year. A competitor for Great Britain in the Quadruple Sculls at the 2024 World Under-23 Rowing Championships, Donovan-Davies earns the MPSF’s inaugural men’s rowing freshman of the year honor.

California seventh-year head coach
Scott Frandsen led the Golden Bears to the MPSF’s inaugural men’s rowing championship, backed by their Varsity 8+ winning time of 5:37.977. Cal’s Freshman 8+ also took home an MPSF title in 5:47.302. Cal has been ranked in the top-two in the nation all season as it returns to the IRA National Championships., earning wins over top-10 programs from Brown, Yale, Stanford, and Washington along the way. Frandsen, a former Pac-12 and national coach of the year, is the first-ever MPSF Men’s Rowing Coach of the Year recipient.
